IAAF - Deressa Chimsa and Yeshi Esayais of Ethiopia took convincing victories at the second edition of the Daegu International Marathon on Sunday (11).
Running along portions of the course which will be used for the Marathon races at the 13th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Daegu, Korea (27 August - 4 September 2011), Chimsa clocked 2:08:45 to win the men's race while Esayias defended her title in the women's with a 2:29:17 run, breaking her own course record.

Ethiopian Airlines is seemingly getting ready to finish discussions and negotiations with Star Alliance later this year, likely to coincide with the upswing in traffic carried via Addis Ababa to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup. These suggestions and rumors are now rekindled since the airline has confirmed added aircraft orders and is aggressively renewing its fleet in preparation of things obviously yet to come.

The country's biggest hydropower project, Beles, which is expected to generate 460 megawatts, is going to start operating in the next two weeks. One of the four turbines at Beles with an installed capacity of generating 115 MW is scheduled to start powering the national grid in mid April. Sources told Capital that the test for power generation would be done while connected to the national grid, unlike previous tests. These sources added that the other three turbines would enter the national grid gradually as part of the test trial, with one coming online every three weeks. Full text

TORONTO, ONTARIO, Apr 05, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Allana Potash Corp. is pleased to announce that it has commenced its Phase I drilling programme on its Ethiopian Potash Project in the Danakhil Depression. The drill is active at hole DK-10-01 which is located on the northern extension of the Musley Deposit and is designed to provide information on the potash mineralization between Parsons holes 233, 238 and 159. Hole DK-10-01 is expected to intersect the potash-bearing Houston Formation at a vertical depth of 75 metres. The Phase I programme is comprised of between 2,500 and 3,000 metres of drilling and is expected to be completed in approximately three months.

The New York Times - Responding to complaints about the Gibe III hydroelectric dam project in Ethiopia, Salini Costruttori, the Italian hydropower developer behind the project, issued a statement late last week arguing that the project’s critics are opposed to Africa’s development.
“The campaign against the construction of the Gibe plant in Ethiopia is merely another initiative without a technical and scientific basis,” the company said.
